A congenital lung malformation — sometimes called a congenital lung lesion or CLM — is a rare condition where part of a baby's lungs did not develop normally during pregnancy. Congenital means present from birth, and lung malformation means that the lung tissue has grown differently. These conditions are not caused by anything a mother did or didn't do during pregnancy. The most common types are CPAM (congenital pulmonary airway malformation, previously called CCAM), BPS (bronchopulmonary sequestration), CLE (congenital lobar emphysema), and CBA (congenital bronchial atresia). Most congenital lung malformations are detected on a routine prenatal ultrasound, and the outlook for the majority of affected babies is very good.
